Sweat is how our body cools down. When we exercise, eat spicy food or go outside on a hot day, it’s normal to sweat. However, some people find themselves perspiring all the time. Excessive sweating treatment does exist but first let’s explore the major causes of extreme perspiration.
Hyperhidrosis This is a condition in which the nerves in charge of triggering the sweat glands become overactive, causing excessive sweating. When you suffer from hyperhidrosis you will sweat through your clothing and perspire so much that it even drips off your hands. Besides inordinate amounts of perspiration people who are plagued by hyperhidrosis sometimes have chills, chest pain, nausea and lightheadedness.
Hyperthyroidism When there are too many thyroid hormones moving throughout the body it causes a condition known as hyperthyroidism. Because of the excess of thyroid hormones, the body tries to keep up with the chemical process involved, which leads to the sweat glands working overtime. Hyperthyroidism is genetic and is most common in women aged 20 to 40.
Glucose Control Disorders For people that are unable to control the glucose (sugar) levels in their bloodstream, excessive sweating will also be a factor. Common glucose control disorders are diabetes and hypoglycemia. Generally, people with these disorders perspire greatly when their glucose levels are too low.
Menopause When a woman’s estrogen levels fluctuate due to the ceasing of her period, over-average sweating can occur. This type of sweating is called a hot flash. For some women, the sweating lasts long enough to merit excessive sweating treatment options while for others it dissipates quickly.
Cancer For those who are unfortunately plagued by cancer, excessive perspiration can also be a side effect of the disease. Liver cancer, Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, leukemia, mesothelioma, carcinoid tumours and bone cancer are the types most known to be associated with overactive sweat glands.
Medications Not all medications cause excessive sweating but taking some antibiotics, psychiatric drugs, high blood pressure medication, dry mouth treatments and certain supplements can lead to more sweating than usual.
Anxiety Disorder If you suffer from stress or anxiety disorders you’ll no doubt find yourself excessively perspiring. When we are stressed our body temperature rises, leading us to sweat. When we’re stressed all the time because of an anxiety disorder that is out of our control, we may undergo extreme perspiration.
