How Long Should I Stay Away From The Sun After Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a popular method to remove unwanted body or facial hair. Laser hair removal is effective and safe, but as with any procedure, there can be side effects and one must make sure to practice proper aftercare.

One aspect of laser hair removal that can be a little tricky pertains to exposure to the sun. Many prospective patients are unsure about how long they should avoid sun exposure after a laser hair removal treatments. If you’re one of the many people who don’t know what the limitations are, then read on and find out.

Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal (LHR) is a process by which highly concentrated beams of light are focussed into the roots of hair follicles. This kills the follicle and often inhibits regrowth after the hair falls out. For many people, LHR is the most effective method of hair removal and one of the only ways to achieve permanent hair loss in a given area.

Because the laser is highly accurate, there is minimal damage to the surrounding skin, but it can still be left a little irritated and raw, and as such is is best not to expose this skin to the sun.

Sun exposure

While many of us like our bodies to look a little tanned, we ultimately know that prolonged sun exposure is a bad thing. This is especially true after a LHR treatment when already sensitive skin can be badly damaged by sun exposure.

Because of this, some people have gotten the idea that they cannot get LHR done in the summer at all. Fortunately for those looking to get that sunkissed look, this is false. You can, but you do need to minimize the amount of sun exposure you get.

Firstly, you should not get a tan prior to LHR. Because the laser’s focus on pigments, some doctors will not treat excessively tanned patients for fear of complications. After your treatment, you may be advised to avoid sun exposure to the treated area from anywhere from a week to a month and a half. Doctors differ on the this matter, but most suggest three weeks. When you do go out into the sun, make sure to use a strong sunblock to protect your skin.
