Most women will experience some form of cellulite, whether it be mild or more severe.
Cellulite looks like dimpled skin, and is typically found in the thigh and buttocks area. Although it’s often associated with being overweight, even very lean and slim people are affected by cellulite, since it’s often genetic.
According to the Mayo Clinic, “Cellulite is caused by fibrous connective cords that tether the skin to the underlying muscle, with the fat lying between. As fat cells accumulate, they push up against the skin, while the long, tough cords pull down. This creates an uneven surface or dimpling.”
Cellulite has no medical repercussions, so treatment is completely optional and are considered aesthetic. That said, the appearance of smooth skin makes a lot of men and women much more confident, which is why cellulite treatment is so popular!
What cellulite treatments are available?
Lasers and Radiofrequency Systems
The most effective option for combatting cellulite is laser and radiofrequency treatment. The most common option combines infrared light with radiofrequency technology and a massage. Another option only uses radiofrequency at deep levels, while another uses diode laser energy.
Each option requires a series of treatments, and semi-long term results lasting about 6 months.
Liposuction
Liposuction is another commonly used treatment to fight cellulite, but it can be less effective than the aforementioned option.
Liposuction involves suctioning out fat cells which can sometimes be the cause of cellulite, but not always. In some cases, liposuction can actually make cellulite more prominent.
Laser assisted liposuction on the other hand, actually destroys fat cells and tightens the skin, which can be effective. This procedure is also less invasive than traditional liposuction.
Topical Creams
Many people have seen a successful reduction or elimination of their cellulite by using a 0.3% retinol cream for a few months.
How can I optimize the effects of my treatment by myself?
After getting one of the treatments above, it is possible to optimize the effects. Some ways include:
Vigorous massage
A vigorous massage can include blood flow and temporarily remove liquid and toxins which can reduce cellulite.
Weight Loss and Muscle Gain
Although cellulite doesn’t exclusively affect overweight people, the effects do seem to be lesser in people with lower body fat percentages and higher muscle mass.
Cellulite Creams
Not to be confused with the retinol cream we mentioned above, many cosmetic stores and pharmacies sell topical creams that promise to tone the skin and reduce cellulite. Although these aren’t proven medically, a number of people claim to have seen success.
