Our necks are important because they frame our faces. Unfortunately, many people struggle with excess skin around their neck. There are a few factors that can contribute to sagging neck skin, including general weight gain, looseness of muscles in the neck, and reduced quality of the skin on the neck. Thankfully, there are measures that can be undertaken in order to get rid of sagging neck skin and remove excess neck fat, resulting in a more rejuvenated and youthful appearance.
1. Neck Lift
This surgical procedure, called a Platysmaplasty in medical jargon, is the best option to pursue in order to achieve the most dramatic results. In this procedure, some skin is removed and the remaining skin, possibly along with some muscles and tissues, is pulled up. The result is a firmer and more youthful neck. If done correctly, there will be no obvious evidence of a surgical procedure having been performed.
2. Liposuction
In a liposuction procedure, the doctor will remove excess fat from the neck area, resulting in a slimmer neck. This can be an extremely effective procedure for those whose sagging is caused by excess fat around the neck, including those who feel that they suffer from the dreaded ‘double chin’.
The recovering time necessary following a liposuction procedure is moderate, generally requiring 2 days to 2 weeks of rest, and the use of a compression garment for 2 to 4 weeks.
3. Botox
Botox is a great, minimally invasive, treatment for moderate creasing and folding on the neck. It is important to consult a highly experienced surgeon for this type of procedure, as there are some highly sensitive areas around the neck.
To be a candidate for liposuction, one should be of generally good health and unable to get rid of fat with moderate diet and exercise.
4. Exercise
Good old fashioned exercise is a great way to slim down any part of the body, including the neck. Any exercise will help one to slim down, but there are a few exercises that specifically target the neck. A couple of great exercises include the ‘neck roll’ – where you simply roll your neck back and forth, and the ‘head raise’ where you lay down on a bed with your head hanging off, and keep your head suspended horizontally.
