Age Spots, also called Liver Spots, are blemishes on the skin associated with aging and skin damage as a result of prolonged sun exposure and an excess production of melanin, which is responsible for skin pigmentation. They range in colour from light brown to black and are located in the areas of the body that are most often exposed to the sun, particularly the back of the hands, face, shoulders, arms and forehead.
Age and liver spots are most common in people over the age of 40 years but can also appear in younger people too, especially if they are involved in outdoor activities and spend a lot of time in the sun. Age and liver spotscan also be the result of exposure to UV light, which includes tanning beds. In most cases, age and liver spots are not medically dangerous but only cosmetically unsightly.
