Mandelic acid peels are a type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) peel, which is similar to that of lactic acid and glycolic acid peels. However, mandelic acid peels are less irritating and more gentler on the skin, since their molecules are larger than those of lactic and glycolic acid, although providing effective treatment for damaged skin.
For first-time patients receiving a chemical peel, mandelic acid is a great option. It works effectively for those with acne prone skin because of its antibacterial properties. As a gentler chemical peel, it is also safe to use for those with sensitive or dark skin types.
Mandelic acid peels are commonly performed on the face and neck, but can be applied to areas of the body with active breakouts or where there are skin pigmentation and discolouration concerns as well.
The Mandelic acid peel works by chemically exfoliating the outermost layers of the skin that contain dead skin cells and clogged pores. This will help reveal the younger, newer skin underneath. Depending on the strength of the peel, and the amount of treatments that you receive, mandelic acid peels will even out the skin tone by reducing the appearance of skin hyperpigmentation or dark spots, such as age and sun spots. It will also help treat acne and eliminate blackheads, while repairing sun damage, photo damaged skin, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
‘Because mandelic acid peels are so gentle on the skin, many of our patients do not experience significant downtime and are able to return to work and their normal activities right away. Immediately after the treatment, your skin may be pink and certain areas may be dry, but the side effects of a mandelic acid peel can generally be covered with makeup. Your skin should fully heal within 2 to 3 days.
Similar to all chemical peels, your full results will not be visible immediately as it takes time to work. Even if you don’t always notice the subtle skin improvements being made, your skin and your results will continue to get better as the days go on.
For dramatic results from the mandelic acid peels, you can expect to have to undergo a series of treatments, which can range from 3 to 6 depending on your particular skin concerns and needs. Mandelic acid peels can be performed every 2 to 3 weeks, however it will completely depend on the sensitivity of your skin and how well it responds to the treatment. Your treatment schedule will be determined during your consultation with Dr. Jain where she will assess the severity of the skin damage and recommend the best course of action to treat it.
