Skin tags are small, skin-coloured growths (tumours) that hang off the skin. However, they are benign. They vary in size and colour and are typically between 2 and 5 millimetres, but larger ones can also occur. They are commonly found in the skin folds, such as on the neck, armpits, near the groin or under the breasts, but they can also occur on the face, primarily on the eyelids. They are very common in both men and women alike.
Are Skin Tags More Common During Pregnancy?
Skin tags are composed of loose collagen fibers (a protein) and blood vessels. Their cause is not well understood, but it is thought that there are several different factors that can make them more likely to occur. For example, there is a correlation between skin tags and obesity, type 2 diabetes, aging and hereditary factors.
Skin tags are also more common during pregnancy. This is thought to be due to the change in hormone levels that occurs during pregnancy, although some women develop them for no apparent reason.
Why You Should Consider Skin Tag Removal:
Skin tags, while generally harmless, have the appearance of warts, which can make many people feel self-conscious. This is especially true if the skin tags appear on the face and/or are larger in size. However, it is important to note that while skin tags are generally harmless, it is important to still keep an eye on them, taking note of any changes in colour, shape or size. Consult your dermatologist accordingly if you notice any changes.
Skin tags can also get caught in jewelry and clothing and cause irritation. Ultimately, skin tag removal is done for cosmetic reasons for more smooth looking skin. Many people also find their skin tags to be an annoyance and therefore choose them to have them removed.
It is important to note that you should never attempt to remove your skin tag yourself, as this will cause heavy bleeding. This is especially true if your skin tag is larger size. In general, it is not safe to remove your skin tags at home and it is always best to have them professionally removed, allowing you to avoid the risk of infection. This will also ensure that you don’t experience any pain.
Depending upon your particular skin tag, skin tag removal may vary, but it is safe, pain-free and quick. Fairview Laser Clinic uses a combination of a quick surgical procedure and/or CO2 Laser and KTP laser, depending upon your particular skin tag.
