Melasma is a skin pigmentation condition which may arise during pregnancy, while taking birth control pills, during hormone replacement therapy or due to a hormonal imbalance. It generally affects the face, neck, chest and arms. It is not dangerous or harmful, but is an aesthetically unpleasant skin condition. Usually it is treated by pigment cell suppressing agents such as Hydroquinone, Kogic Acid, Salicylic Acid etc. It can also be minimized by chemical peels and laser treatments using fractionated CO2 and Q-switch laser.
