Millions of people have stretch marks: unsightly lines and redness which can cause distress, embarrassment and a loss of confidence. Fortunately, stretch marks can be removed with advanced laser treatments.
Laser treatments can improve the skin’s appearance and remove stretch marks leaving smoother, unlined skin. The treatment is suitable for most skin types and skin tones.
How are stretch marks caused?
Stretch marks are caused when the skin is stretched over a short period of time, such as during puberty, during pregnancy and in cases of weight gain. This rapid stretching weakens the collagen, resulting in a loss of elasticity. Marks or lines then appear in the dermis, the layer of skin which maintains its shape.
Stretch marks can appear on any part of the skin which has undergone rapid stretching, such as the abdomen, breasts, hips, arms and legs. Some areas can be disguised under clothing, but many people feel too embarrassed to wear fashionable summer clothing or swimwear if they have stretch marks.
What is laser treatment for stretch marks?
Laser treatment uses focused micro-fractional laser technology. Short pulses of micro-fine light are directed precisely into the targeted areas. These laser pulses treat the collagen and support structure of the skin’s sub-layers. Micro-wounds are created under the skin, which promotes the body’s natural healing process. The older, damaged cells and tissues are removed as part of this healing process and new collagen and elastin are formed.
This formation of new collagen and elastin regenerate the skin, producing new smooth toned skin, with a reduced appearance of marks and redness.
How long does laser treatment for stretch marks take?
Laser treatment for stretch marks usually takes about 30 minutes. This of course depends on the area and size of treatment. The duration and amount of treatments will be discussed during your consultation with your cosmetic dermatologist.
Most people need from 3 to 5 treatments, but again this depends on every patient’s unique skin type aesthetic goals.
What is the recovery time after laser treatment for stretch marks?
There is no down time after laser treatment for stretch marks. Most people are able to resume their normal lifestyle immediately after their sessions. However, there can be some discomfort, which again depends on the size and location of the targeted area.
