What It Is

Cellulite causes the skin to look lumpy and dimpled and occurs most commonly on the hips, thighs, and buttocks. It may also occur in the breasts, upper arms, or belly. It is an extremely common condition and occurs most commonly in women as opposed to men, although men can also develop cellulite. Cellulite is more common in women because there are differences in the way fat cells, muscle, and connective tissue in the body are distributed in a woman’s skin versus a man’s. There are a variety of factors that influence the occurrence of cellulite in the body, such as genetics, skin thickness, gender, the distribution and amount of body fat, and age, Cellulite equally affects people of all races around the world and the risk of cellulite development can be attributed to family history of cellulite, pregnancy, and an inactive lifestyle.
