Age Spots & Liver Spots

What It Is

Age Spots, also called Liver Spots, are blemishes on the skin associated with aging and skin damage as a result of prolonged sun exposure and an excess production of melanin, which is responsible for skin pigmentation. They range in colour from light brown to black and are located in the areas of the body that are most often exposed to the sun, particularly the back of the hands, face, shoulders, arms and forehead.

Age and liver spots are most common in people over the age of 40 years but can also appear in younger people too, especially if they are involved in outdoor activities and spend a lot of time in the sun. Age and liver spotscan also be the result of exposure to UV light, which includes tanning beds. In most cases, age and liver spots are not medically dangerous but only cosmetically unsightly.

How It’s Treated

Laser Treatments

  • KTP Laser – The KTP Laser is an effective treatment to address sun spots and liver spots on the face, chest, and legs, as well as treat redness from rosacea, and blood vessels on the face. The laser is relatively painless, does not require any downtime, and treatments can give a dramatic improvement after a short series of treatments.

  • Nd YAG Laser – The powerful Nd YAG laser is able to absorb melanin pigment in the skin and is suitable for all skin types and skin tones. This laser is highly effective in the treatment of age and liver spots along with other skin pigmentation conditions.

Non-Laser Treatments (list chemical peels in assignment sheet)

A wide variety of chemical peels can be used in the treatment of age and liver spots to reduce the appearance of an uneven skin tone.

  • AFA Clay Peel – The AFA Clay Peel is a two-step, non-surgical procedure that will immediately create smoother, softer and younger-looking skin.

  • Jessner’s Peel – The Jessner’s Peel is an anti-aging peel designed to dramatically improve skin elasticity and tone. It reverses fine lines and wrinkles, pigment irregularities and mild scarring.

  • Mandelic Acid Peel - This safe and gentle peel is effective for all skin types and tones and is used to lighten skin pigmentation as a result of sun damage, acne, scarring, melasma, and photo damaged skin.

  • Retinol Peel – The Retinol Peel uses natural Vitamin A to exfoliate the skin. This will help with overall facial rejuvenation and lighten sun damage and uneven pigmentation on the skin, such as acne scars.

  • Obagi Blue Peel – The Blue Peel is a medium strength chemical peel used to enhance the texture of the skin while diminishing the appearance of fine lines, age spots, and other types of skin discolorations, including sun damage. One of the primary benefits of the Obagi Blue Peel over other types of peels is that the strength of the formula can be adjusted depending on your needs.

  • TCA Peel – Trichloroacetic Acid is a medium strength chemical agent applied to the face or hands to exfoliate and renew the skin in the treated area. TCA works well for treating darker skin types and has the ability to correct pigmentation, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, and for the removal of superficial blemishes.

Depending on your condition, these non-laser age and liver spot treatments can be used in combination with laser treatments to maximize the results of your procedure. During your consultation with Dr. Jain, your skin needs and concerns will be discussed and a customized treatment plan will be recommended based on your specific condition.
